Pa suction ratings explained: what 50,000Pa really means

Box numbers have inflated from 4,000Pa to 50,000Pa in a few years. Here is what the figure measures and why it is nearly useless for comparing brands.
Pa measures sealed pressure, not cleaning
Pascals measure the pressure drop a motor can create against a sealed inlet — nozzle blocked, no air moving. It tells you the theoretical peak the motor can pull, and nothing about how much air per second it moves once a nozzle, a filter and a full dust bowl are in the path.
Cleaning is done by airflow, not by static pressure. Air watts and CFM describe airflow; Pa does not. That is why a 4,500Pa unit with a wide, short air path can outperform a nominally stronger unit that squeezes air through a narrow moulded elbow and a clogged mesh.
Why cross-brand comparison fails
There is no enforced test standard for the Pa figure printed on a handheld vacuum box. Brands measure at different points in the air path, at different battery states of charge, with different filters fitted or removed. Two units both claiming 20,000Pa can differ by a factor of two in real airflow.
The figure is directionally useful within one brand's own lineup, because the same lab measured both. Across brands, treat it as marketing copy.
The trend is telling: category claims have gone from around 4,000Pa to 50,000Pa in roughly five years without motors becoming ten times better. What changed was the number, not the vacuum.
What to look at instead
Battery voltage and motor type tell you more. A brushless motor holds its speed under load better than a brushed one and generally lasts longer, because there are no carbon brushes to wear. A 16V or 20V lithium pack has headroom that a 7.4V pack does not.
Filter surface area matters more than most people expect. A larger pleated or conical filter keeps airflow up for longer between cleanings; a small flat mesh chokes within minutes on fine dust.
Then look at the nozzle geometry. Sharp internal bends, sudden diameter changes and long thin extension tubes all cost airflow. A short, wide, straight path beats an impressive Pa figure every time.
A home test that actually discriminates
Take a woven cushion, work a teaspoon of pet hair into it with your palm, and count the passes needed to clear a 30cm square. Then repeat with the dust bowl half full. The second number is the one that predicts how you will feel about the vacuum in six months.

Pa is a sealed-pressure spec with no common test standard, so it cannot be compared across brands. Airflow, motor type, battery voltage, filter area and nozzle geometry determine cleaning. If a listing leads with a five-digit Pa number and says nothing about the motor or the filter, that tells you where the engineering budget went.
